Anuradhapura is one of the ancient capitals of Sri Lanka and is well known for its well-preserved ruins of early Sri Lankan civilization. From the 4th century BC until the early 11th century AD, it served as the political and cultural capital of the island. During this long period, it became one of the most stable and important centers of political power and urban life in South Asia. The ancient city is considered a sacred place for Buddhists around the world and is surrounded by many monasteries that cover an area of more than 40 square kilometers. Anuradhapura also appears in Hindu tradition, where it is sometimes linked with stories of the legendary king Ravana from the Ramayana.
